Climbing FAQs

Q: What if I get scared when I'm on the rope?
A: Just stop, breathe, relax and enjoy the scenery around you. Take your time and you'll feel better. The beauty of a top rope is that you can always ask for tension and hang on the rope to rest or gain confidence in the safety system.

Q: Can I use a handhold for a foothold?
A: You frequently can. As long as you can reach it, use it! But when it comes to
footwork, remember that baby steps are often the most efficient way to the top.

Q: Can't I just rent the equipment and go try it?
A: If you have no or limited climbing experience, it is absolutely necessary to take a class, join a climbing club or go with an extremely experienced climber. Climbing is as safe as you make it, and you want to do it safely!

Q: What is an anchor?
A: This refers to the point of attachment for a climbing rope, usually constructed of slings, runners or the rope itself. The term includes top-rope anchors, belay anchors or a protection piece mid-climb.

Q: Can I build my own climbing wall?
A: Yes, climbing holds are available in many shapes, colors and sizes. You can build a home wall in your garage, backyard or even office. Home gyms are an excellent way to master technique and develop endurance. Instructional booklets usually accompany packages of holds, or they can be found online.

Q: I don't have much arm or hand strength, so won't it be hard to climb?
A: Hand and arm strength definitely helps, but you primarily use the power of your legs to move along the rocks. Good footwork and body position can take much of the weight off your arms. Also, women and children naturally have good balance (due to their lower center of gravity), which can compensate for less upper-body strength.
Q: How do I find a place to climb?
A: Search online to find local climbing gyms, climbing or mountaineering clubs and organizations.
