Backpacking -- tramping, trekking or
backcountry camping -- is essentially the combination of hiking and camping in
the backcountry. For some adventurer, backpacking is the act of sleeping in the
wild, away from the trappings of civilization or the art of being
self-contained, carrying everything you need to survive, whilst walking/cycling
from one location to another on a multi-day journey through a natural landscape.
A
backpacker carries camping gear: a tent, sleeping
bag, cookware, food and clothing, in a
backpack and hikes to a backcountry
camping destination.
The great outdoors can be
overwhelming for first-time backpackers, especially when you are camping in the
wilderness -- miles from roads, facilities and other people.
Backpacking trips range from short
one-night trips to multi-day trips. Some trips start at one trailhead and end
at another. And some backpackers even set-out on months long distance end-to
end treks called thru hikes.
For first-time backpackers, the idea
can be a bit daunting. After all, hiking long hours with a heavy pack, sleeping
in primitive camp sites with no facilities whatsoever, and relying only on the
equipment you can carry at one time are things that you don’t really do in your
everyday life! But don't let the unfamiliar landscape or worries of being in
the wild keep you from going backpacking.
But to get started backpacking you
don't have to walk thousands of miles. There are many short and moderate
destinations that are scenic and beautiful.
